Captured at Nugget Point in the Catlins on New Zealand’s southern coastline, this image was made in the early morning as I was walking in to photograph the sunrise at the lighthouse.
As daylight began to break, a strong red glow formed along the horizon while the first light of morning started to lift across the sky. The lighthouse beam was still active, cutting through the fading darkness and reaching out over the ocean.
The cliffs sit in deep silhouette around the headland, framing the lighthouse and guiding the eye into the scene. It was a quiet walk-in with changing light the whole way, working quickly as the morning developed around me.
