The scene begins with a foreground of wet basalt stones and golden tussock, creating a textured pathway into the landscape. Beyond, the towering Mitre Peak range emerges beneath shifting light and drifting shadow, as warm golden tones meet the deep, moody greys of the surrounding storm clouds.
This photograph represents the patience and persistence often required to capture truly unique moments in the landscape. After five days spent waiting for the right combination of weather, light and atmosphere, the scene finally transformed as a brief window of golden light broke through the clouds.
The journey included long hours in the field, persistent rain, cold conditions and plenty of sandfly bites, but those challenges became part of the story behind the image. For a few moments, Milford Sound revealed a rare and powerful combination of light, mood and scale.
