Standing quietly among the golden tussock of Patearoa, the weathered red timber of McTamney Stable immediately caught my attention. The old track curving through the foreground seemed to lead naturally towards the stable, creating a gentle sense of movement through the landscape.
Set against the rugged, schist-covered hills of Central Otago, the red timber stands out beautifully against the muted colours of the surrounding high country. Weathered by years of wind, sun and snow, the old stable has become a wonderful part of the landscape.
The soft light across the tussock and darker hills gave the scene a calm, moody feeling that I really enjoyed. There was something about the combination of the old stable, the winding track and the wide-open country that made me stop and take the photograph.
I’m always drawn to these old structures scattered through the high country. They add a sense of history and character to an already beautiful landscape, and make you wonder about the people and stories connected to them.
